Wonder

I got this book as a hand-me-down present from a boy I used to babysit. He is ten years old and started his own book club with his friends--how cool is that? His whole family gave it rave reviews so I was dying to read it! I read it on the airplane home from California last month. It was such a sweet, sweet story. It is one of those books that 1) you wish it would go on for at least another hundred pages and 2) you want everyone to go and read it so that you can talk about it with them!

The story is about a boy born with extreme facial deformities and the perspectives of people around him. Growing up with a handicapped older brother, I could definitely relate to all of the characters. While it is frustrating getting stared at, it is also understandable that people can just act differently around things they are not used to. If you haven’t read Wonder yet, I highly recommend it. The story will make you cry but also remind you that we have so much to be grateful for and what a difference a positive attitude can make. It is a quick read but has such a powerful and memorable message. It is great for adults and kids and I think it would be a great book for teachers to assign in 5th or 6th grade!

One of my favorite quotes from the story:

WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN BEING
RIGHT OR BEING KIND, CHOOSE KIND.”
